My group studies B cells in autoimmune and interstitial lung diseases (ILD). We focus on B cell signaling, which we measure using phosphoflow, a technique we optimised for B cells. We have found that signaling through the B cell receptor (BCR) is increased in patients with active autoimmune disease, and that particularly transitional and naïve B cells are more responsive to stimulation. In parallel, a similar phenotype was found in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), suggesting an underlying immune deregulation. We are currently investigating how signaling deregulation in patients associated with severity of disease and clinical outcome.
